It’s Jamaica Season Which Means Lots of Food, Prizes, and Fun
Summer is coming to a close which means a few things like pumpkin spice is here, the leaves are changing colors, and it's jamaica season. That's jamaica, pronounced ha-my-cuh, and not Jamaica like the islands. There are quite a few people who have never heard of a jamaica and it's honestly one of the saddest things but don't worry because I am here to educate the masses.
A jamaica is a celebration held by most Catholic Churches where different businesses, parishioners, and just groups come together to hold a sort of carnival. This event is actually a way for the church to make money and allows people to come together in a very fun and creative way. Some of the foods at a jamaica include things you would find at the fair such as turkey legs, hamburgers, and pies but there are some other yummy treats like elote, fajitas, fruits with lots of toppings, and much more.
This style of fundraising and fun wouldn't be complete without games for the kids, raffles and chances for prizes along with some live musical performances by local bands and out of town bands. Jamaica's also serve as a way to join the community together whether they go to church every Sunday or not.
There are some things to remember when going to a jamaica and that is to bring cash just in case you need to purchase tickets to buy things, who serves the best food, stay hydrated and where the raffles are. Do not be intimidated by the amount of people when you attend your first jamaica as they are all friendly and are willing to point you in the right direction.
