History Time

In case you don't know, Speakeasy bars gained widespread popularity in the United States during the Prohibition era, which lasted from 1920 to 1933 and extended even further in some states. Throughout this period, the sale, production, and distribution (bootlegging) of alcoholic beverages were prohibited across the entire country.

Shh... What's the Password?

So, instead of buying alcohol in secret and drinking at home in private, everyone say screw it, and opened up bars and nightclubs in secret locations. Their methods of deception varied. Sometimes, the establishment would be behind a door with no markings, down a dark alley, wherein you'd have to know the secret knock or the secret password. Other times they would be hidden inside another business and accessed via a secret entrance. And so on and so forth.

Are You Cool Enough?

After the Prohibition ended, obviously the speakeasy went away for the most part. In many cities, if you know where to look, there are still bars and nightclubs that operate much like a speakeasy. Not much of an online presence, and no signage out front, you just have to be cool enough to have heard about it. It creates a bit of a mystique.

Spot the Spot

In Wichita Falls, you can find just such a spot. if you know where to look. Down by the train tracks, amongst some abandoned buildings you can find it off the corner of Indiana and 7th.

Check out the video below and see if you can spot it! Turn your volume on, there are some audio hints.

What do you think?  Is it a funny idea, totally going in the opposite direction?  I don't know if you can make it out on the video or not, but it literally says Speakeasy Distillery about six times on the outside of the building, haha!

All kidding aside, it's a great place, check it out if you're ever in Fallstown.
