Lubbock is already unseasonably warm this year. In fact, as of my writing this (2/21/24), we could set a record high-temperature today.

Does this mean we can go ahead and start celebrating Spring? Can we start some plants outside, and possibly fill up the pool?

If you've lived in Lubbock long enough, you know we always seem to have a Spring "false start."  It's just incredibly early this year. Already, I'm seeing little purple wildflowers popping up all over town.

However, historically speaking, there is a high likelihood that we will have another freeze this year, so you may want to exercise some patience.

The earliest last freeze we have ever had in Lubbock was March 2nd, 2017. That's only a couple of weeks away. However, the latest freeze Lubbock has ever had was May 8th, which is mind-boggling, but that was way back in 1938.

On average, the last freeze date for Lubbock is April 10th. However, since it is an El Nino year, I think we can reasonably expect it to come earlier than that.

If you still can't stand to wait for Spring, you can get started on some plants here in Lubbock. You'll just need to keep your seedlings inside. You can start many leafy plants, herbs, cruciferous vegetables, eggplants, and tomatoes. You'll want to wait just a little longer on your pumpkins, watermelons, and squash.

I'm not a huge fan of winter, but I'm doing my best to soak in the nice things about it while I can, so hopefully I can remember what it was like to be cold once our blazing hot summer begins.
