If you want to see the state of American politics, look no further than the fight against Proposition A.

I would have great respect for sane arguments against the proposal to decriminalize smaller amounts of marijuana, but that's not what we got. We we got was a 2024 version of the 1939 film "Reefer Madness". We saw the type of nonsense that motivated the poorly informed, high on propaganda, to head to the polls. It was textbook American politics of inflaming the base, no matter the cost.

The people behind Proposition A ran an earnest campaign, with a little 2024 trolling, but I did not see anything that I would consider deceptive. I really hope they hold their heads up high, because they stood up for something they believed in an ran a fantastic campaign they can be proud of.

The important thing is how many people from Lubbock, Texas voted FOR the proposition. A full 35%, that's 1 in 3 voted for it and that's amazing. It's a clear and present signal that times are changing. It took several times before all of the hyperbole and falsehoods about legalizing alcohol were overcome, so this should be seen as a positive and constructive step forward.

Most importantly, this was not a waste of anyone's time and/or energy. This was the steady drip that becomes a puddle, that becomes a river, and so on. It shows that there is a changing of the guard coming, it just wasn't time yet. I would advice the people behind Proportion A that "the obstacle is the way", and to focus on voter registration and point to this election as proof that this fight is completely winnable.
