At some point in adulthood, someone will ask to see your birth certificate, and you will have no clue where it is.

Do my parents have it? Did I leave it on top of the closet at my old apartment? Did I accidentally throw it out with the mail?

If it hasn't happened to you yet, consider yourself lucky.

There will come a time...

If you were born in Texas and you need a certified copy of your birth certificate, you have a few different options.

City of Lubbock Vital Statistics

Located at 1209 13th Street, the City of Lubbock Vital Statistics office handles Texas birth records. You can visit in person to request a certified copy.

Online Through Texas.gov

This is probably your fastest and easiest option. You can order your birth certificate online through Texas.gov. Make sure you have your ID and meet all of the eligibility requirements, and you'll also have to pay a small fee, because apparently being born wasn't the last time you'd be charged for it...

Snail Mail

There's also a mail-in option, but it requires an application, acceptable identification, and a notary to seal the deal...because some paperwork requires even MORE paperwork. Funny how the world works.

Important Reminder

Make sure you are ordering a certified copy if that's what you need. A birth verification letter is NOT the same thing as a certified copy. I've made that mistake. Don't be like me. Be smart.

If you're sitting at home scratching your head and wondering where that pesky birth certificate is hiding, congratulations: you're now participating in one of adulthood's least fulfilling scavenger hunts.

But thank goodness you don't have to travel back to the hospital you were born in to ask if they may have kept the original copy. Mine would be a bit dusty...
