Look, I get it, life can get a little messy in Texas. And between all the Amazon boxes, busted appliances, and questionable leftovers in the fridge, it’s tempting to just chunk it and forget it. But before you go full spring-cleaning ninja on your garage and backyard, let’s talk trash, literally.

Because in Texas, some of your junk could actually land you in real trouble.

Texas Still Has a Trash Problem

We’re not pointing fingers, but have y’all seen the side of the road lately? According to Don’t Mess With Texas, nearly half of the trash cluttering up Texas highways comes from people tossing cigarette butts and soda bottles out their car windows. That’s right, your Dr Pepper habit might be more dangerous than you think.

And with the extreme summer heat in Texas, improperly disposed waste, especially anything flammable, could cause some serious problems.

What Happens If You Get Caught?

Relax. No one’s gonna show up at your house with a search warrant because of that crusty paint can you threw away. But if the city or your waste service catches you repeatedly tossing off-limits items, you could get hit with a serious fine.

Better safe than sorry, and a little recycling effort goes a long way toward keeping our Lone Star State looking as good as it should.

So What Should You Do?

Call your local waste management office or check their website. Many cities offer special collection days or drop-off points for hazardous items. There are also recycling centers that’ll happily take your weird stuff with no judgment.

Just don’t be the neighbor in Texas who stacks their tires next to the mailbox.
