On Thursday, December 3rd, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide around $204 million in emergency SNAP food benefits for December.

Administered by HHSC, Snap, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides food assistance to around 1.7 million low-income families across the state of Texas.

Governor Abbott said:

The extension of these emergency SNAP benefits ensures that Texans can continue to provide nutritious food for their families during the COVID-19 pandemic [...] I thank the USDA for their ongoing partnership as we provide the support and resources that Texas families need during this time.

These allotments are also in addition to the almost $1.7 billion in benefits that have been previously provided to the state between April and November of 2020. It's reported HHSC received federal approval from the US Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size.

Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter said:

These expanded benefits will continue to help feed families during this ongoing pandemic [...] We also want to remind recipients to protect their health and safety by wearing masks and keeping socially distant when shopping.
