The City of Lubbock Health Department has seen an increase in reports of recreational water illnesses (RWIs), including cryptosporidium.

RWIs are caused by germs spread by swallowing or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools and water play areas, as well as natural bodies of water such as lakes. They account for a wide variety of infections, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections. Chlorine does not kill all germs instantly, contrary to popular belief.

To protect yourself, your family and friends, stay out of the water if you have diarrhea or a commonly reported RWI. Make sure to shower before getting in the water, and do not swallow the water.
