Since the moment Chris Young and Lauren Alaina showed up at the Spotify House at Ole Red during CMA Music Fest earlier this summer to debut their collaboration “Town Ain’t Big Enough,” fans can’t seem to get enough of the lusciousness of the heartbreaker of a song.

But what fans might not know is that Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney is a co-writer on that song.

“Shay is singing some of the backgrounds on the song,” Young tells Taste of Country during a recent interview.

In fact, during the writing and recording of the song, Mooney played a big role, even taking over the singing on Alaina’s part before she actually recorded it.

“I mean, let’s face it, he can sing like a girl,” laughed Young, speaking from the comfort of his tour bus hours before taking the stage at Windy City Smokeout. “That’s exactly what I told him the other day, and he was like, ‘I hate you.’ The fact is that—I just can’t sing up there! It’s crazy what he can do!”

In fact, Young says he just happens to have a recording of Mooney taking Alaina’s part, and he just might need to share it with the world one of these days.

“The parts that we stack in the chorus where Lauren is doing like an octave above? Well, I have a recording in which Shay [is] singing that in that high voice,” concludes Young, who will head out on the fall leg of his Raised On Country World Tour 2019 alongside openers the Eli Young Band and Matt Stell. “We might need to break that out at some point.”
