Texas Tech's shortstop Cal Conley has had a great year at the plate and has made his fair share of highlight plays in the hole. His season has put him into a small group of finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award. An award for the best shortstop in college baseball that has a special significance to Red Raider fans. Wallace himself was a Red Raider shortstop who played for the Red Raiders from 1977-80 and died of leukemia at the age of 27.

Cal Conley headlines the list of six finalists for the award with his fellow finalists being senior Liam Spence from Tennessee, junior R.J. Yeager from Mercer, sophomores Trey Sweeney from Eastern Illinois and Collin Burns from Tulane, and the second-year freshman, Brooks Lee, from Cal Poly.

Conley mashed for Texas Tech this season and was a mainstay in the Red Raiders lineup starting every single game at SS after game one and entered the postseason hitting .337. He's got 13 home runs and 52 RBI along with a solid fielding percentage.

Arguably the biggest highlight from Conley came when he hit back-to-back home runs against West Virginia. One from the left side of the plate, the other from the right side of the plate. Epic.

Now, The College Baseball Hall of Fame has a long history in Lubbock, Texas. Cal Conley plays at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Brooks Wallace was a Red Raider in Lubbock, Texas. All that being said, I shouldn't have been surprised by the wide margin that Texas Tech's Cal Conley was leading the poll for who should win the award put out by the CB Hall of Fame.

When I saw it this afternoon Conley was leading two other finalists 95% to 5% combined. Safe to say he's the front runner if the committee that checks this poll is the same committee handing out the award.
