Broken Shot Glasses & Soiled Underwear: Residents Trash Lubbock Neighborhood’s Pool

A concept that I've never understood is why there are some grown adults out there who don't have the basic understanding of respect and responsibility. This is most commonly seen in shared spaces where they don't seem to know how to behave themselves or take care of their surroundings.

The reason I bring this up is because I live in a neighborhood with a community pool. The neighborhood is a newer development, so this is the first summer that the pool has been fully functioning.

Everyone was so excited to finally have this pool up and running. There are really nice bathrooms and changing rooms, and the pool is even heated. They also have a Bluetooth lock system on the gate so only residents can access it and not have to worry about random people pool hopping.

It all sounds so wonderful, right? But of course, irresponsible people have to ruin it for everyone else.

The last time I went for a swim, there was broken plastic shot glasses scattered around the floor of the pool. The shot glasses were clear, so people wouldn't notice them until they cut into their feet. My partner and I spent most of our time there scanning the pool to make sure we got all of the pieces out so no one else got hurt.

Keep in mind, this is a neighborhood that mostly consists of families with young children and there isn’t supposed to be any food or drink brought into the area. The shenanigans don't end there.

There have been cases of people leaving their belongings all over the facility, including toys, inflatables, clothing and even a pair of swim trunks at the bottom of the pool. People are dealing with overflowing trash bins by leaving their excess food sitting on the pool deck for someone else to come in and have to deal with.

If you thought that was gross, somebody even stuffed a pair of soiled men’s underwear into the toilet paper storage compartment. Who does that?

This isn't even an experience exclusive to my neighborhood. My friend has been telling me about the pool at their apartment complex and how they keep having to close it and drain it to get rid of broken glass. It's happened at least three time so far this summer. People still manage to break one of the most basic and well-known pool rules: no glass.

Most people out there are great and not the problem. However, it's the select few that spoil a good thing for everyone else.
