One day after announcing an end to all medical treatments, Senator John McCain (R- Arizona) died on Saturday surrounded by family in Arizona. Senator McCain was a decorated war hero, longtime U.S. senator and former presidential candidate.

The 81 year-old was the Republican nominee for president in 2008, paired with then-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Democrat Barack Obama beat McCain in the 2008 presidential election.

Funeral arrangements for McCain are pending, but CNN reports former presidents George W. Bush and Obama have been asked to speak at his funeral.

Vox reports Arizona Governor Doug Ducey will appoint a fellow Republican to fill the McCain's senate seat through the 2020 election. McCain's widow, Cindy, may be a possible candidate for the appointment.
