Most of us have heard the term "blue norther". But what about a "brown norther"? That's what happened this evening when a cold front came blowing in on the south plains at around 6pm.
It's official. Lubbock, Texas has seen 30 days of temperatures above 100 degrees! This breaks a record set in 1934 when we had twenty-nine 100 plus days.
Hot temperatures that have been in the Midwest are spreading now to the Eastern coast of the United States. In the past few days heat indexes (feels like temps) have reached up to 120 degrees in Mitchell, South Dakota and 126 in Newton, Iowa!
The weather outside may get ugly, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Be the snow day hero to your kids, and get the recipe for Snow Ice Cream, after the jump.
Here is what the DPS folks say about being safe when storms are approaching West Texas:
ICE STORM PREPAREDNESS: PLANNING
Winter storms can strand motorists traveling northern routes in Texas, sometimes striking South Texas and coastal areas. When winter storms threaten, monitor broadcast media and NOAA Weather Radio for information. Keep your gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.
A powerful storm is expected to hit 11 states and has already dropped record snow in unlikely places like Dallas. Air travelers have also been hit hard with more than 1,700 cancelled flights.
