This wonderful event crosses genre boundaries with a mix of talent, music and song. Lubbock Lights celebrates a love of history and features the music of Sonny Curtis, Joe Ely and Lloyd Maines Thursday, April 27th in the Allen Theatre, in the Student Union Building at Texas Tech.

This unique presentation features not only performances, but conversations with these iconic artists to give insight into all that has gone into their incredible work.

Sonny Curtis was a lead guitarist for Buddy Holly and an iconic song writer for legends like Hank Williams Jr., Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly, according to his website. Waylon Jennings was quoted as saying: "My hero then was Sonny Curtis ... I admired him so much, I wanted to change my name to Sonny.I even tried to stand like him."

Joe Ely grew up here in Lubbock and formed the Flatliners in 1970 with Jimmy Gilmore and Butch Hancock. Together, they were a mix of country and rock. He's written legendary songs, including music for the soundtrack of Robert Redford's movie The Horse Whisperer. Joe Ely is still touring and recently released the album Panhandle Rambler, music with a solid West Texas sound.

Lloyd Maines has held an important role in the growth of Texas Music for more than 30 years. He's a Grammy Award-winning musician and producer. Steel guitar is just one of the many instruments this iconic musical talent plays so well. You can also find him on the West Texas Walk of Fame here in Lubbock.

Tickets for Lubbock Lights are $23 and available through the Lubbock Civic Center's website. Students can get a free ticket at the Student Union Building ticket booth with valid Texas Tech University ID.
