If you've got some vacation built up and are taking it around the holidays and plan on staying put, this article isn't for you (my only recommendation on what to wear would be "as little as possible).

However, if you've got a company holiday party, gathering at a friend's home, charity event or family gathering, you want to make sure you don't over or under dress.

First of all, it's perfectly acceptable to ask the host what the "dress code" will/should be. It's always awkward to show up over or under dressed.

Party at your buddy's house? Go casual. Cocktail party for a charity event? Business casual. Holiday Award Ceremony? Might want to go formal on that.

Here are just a few tips about the different categories:

  • Formal- Black Tie/White Tie: Guys go with the Tux, girls need the evening gown.
  • Black Tie Optional: I still lean toward the Tux, but a conservative tie would work with a dark suit and white shirt. Ladies, back to the formal evening gown.
  • Semi-Formal: Dark business suit for the men, while the ladies can get away with a cocktail dress for this one!
  • Festive: Does not mean come in your Halloween best or prepared to down a few hurricanes and see "what these beads can get me". A seasonal sport coat is good and the "festive" really only relates to creativity with the tie. Cocktail dress again fine for the ladies.
  • Dressy Casual: Seasonal sport coat or blazer is great, with slacks and optional tie. Ladies can get away with a simple dress or nice jeans and dress shirt.
  • Casual: Does not mean your favorite pair of jeans. Khakis or nice (see free of holes or bleach stains) jeans with a slogan-free t-shirt are fine. Ladies can wear a sundress, skirt or nice jeans.
