The Consumer Safety Commission reported 70 emergency room visits due to hoverboards as of Monday afternoonGranted that's not an epidemic and it's probably a very small percentage compared to how many were sold, but that's still something to consider if you bought one of these for your child.

CNNMoney.com reports that there's now a hashtag for hoverboard wipeouts at #hoverboardfail, where you can witness or post your own accident.

My sister's kids got hoverboards this year and I was teasing her about the injury possibilities, but it seems they are real.  And besides the accidents there are numerous reports of hoverboards exploding and starting on fire.

Now, I'm not an alarmist but there are some obvious safety issues and you need to take some precautions. A helmet and some padding wouldn't be a bad idea.

The CNN report does go on to say that many of the injured were in fact the parents who decided to try the hoverboard out for themselves.

Here's an example of how fast you can fall and even if you're a professional baseball player like Dan Uggla, you can loose your balance pretty easily.
