Yes the dog days of summer are upon us! Funny thing is it doesn't mean what you may think according to the Farmer's Almanac, the biggest dog day is July 23rd!

Even though we love our dogs, somehow common 'dog' expressions like, ending up in the 'dog house' or 'it's gone to the dogs' are anything but good! Somehow, I always assumed that the 'dog days of summer' were named accordingly.

There is more to this story however! The official dates for summer's dog days are July 3rd to August 11th according to the Farmers Almanac.

During this time of year the sun is in the same sky as Sirius which is key because it is also known as the dog star! The two are in perfect alignment on July 23rd, which is considered to be the heart of the dog days! Dog days last from 20 days before to 20 days after this date!

Who knew?! Now we know. I for one am glad it's not really about dogs! Stay hydrated, remember sun screen and remember to safeguard your pets as well during the thick of the summer heat!
