When Eddie Murphy pulled out of hosting the Oscars this year, the powers-that-be brought in Mr. Reliable--Billy Crystal. And being a Crystal fan, I enjoyed the show Sunday night. Considering all the starving people all over the world, the whole event is a silly annual event to begin with.
Who are the people voting on who wins an Academy Award? It's the tally of the voting membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A recent study by the Los Angeles Times shows that of the 5,765 members, 5,100 are white and 77% are male, 54% are over 60.
No matter how much a sure thing a movie seems, like this year's expected shoe-in at the Oscars, "The Social Network", it could fall victim to too much hype, or maybe too much competition.
