Man Runs From Lubbock Police, Sawed-Off Shotgun Found in His Backpack

Lubbock police officers found a sawed-off shotgun in the backpack of a man who ran from officers.

KAMC News reports that an officer noticed the suspect, Matthew Castillo, walking down the sidewalk, so they tried to talk with him. Why officers were in the area wasn't made clear in news reports.

Apparently, Castillo was looking at the officer nervously, and as multiple officers approached him wanting to talk he ran into the street and yelled "I didn't do anything."

Castillo was chased into a parking lot in the 4300 block of Avenue Q. There, officers say he reached into his backpack as if to pull something out, so a K9 unit was released. The dog bit Castillo, allowing officers to take him into custody.

In Castillo's pocket, officers found a sandwich bag with marijuana. Inside of the backpack, officers found a sawed-off shotgun. It had been modified to have a pistol grip and the two barrels were less than 18 inches in length, making it a prohibited weapon.

Castillo had outstanding warrants. One of those warrants prohibited him from owning a firearm. He sustained injuries on his lower left leg from the dog bite.

After receiving medical clearance, Castillo was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center.
