Lubbock voters on Tuesday cast their ballots not only for President, Senate, and other offices around the state, but also for a bond totaling $103.4 million dollars. And the vote really wasn't that close.

According to final results from the Lubbock County Elections Office, voters in Lubbock approved of the bond 53% to 47% with over 92,000 votes cast. Supporters of the bond election hailed its passing as something that was needed for both safety and for the growth of Lubbock.

The bond will take on seven different road projects, including the following:

  • Broadway from Avenue Q to Avenue E
  • University Avenue from 50th Street to South Loop 289
  • Upland Avenue from 98th Street to 114th Street
  • 34th Street from Upland Avenue to Alcove Avenue
  • 146th Street from University Avenue to Avenue P
  • 146th Street from Slide Road to Quaker Avenue
  • Avenue P from 130th Street to 146th Street

The most controversial of these is Broadway from Avenue Q to Avenue E. This stretch of Broadway will see bricks removed and replaced by concrete. Brick pavers would be used in the intersections. The bricks that are removed will be cleaned and held on to for a future project.

The average homeowner in Lubbock can expect a tax increase of just under $30 due to the bond passing.
