What is a Pacu fish?

The name Pacu refers to multiple species of omnivorous fish relatives of piranhas. They mainly feed on plants and vegetation, but with teeth like that, they can also attack other fish and even eat various forms of tree nuts.

These fish also differ from their meat-eating cousins in size. An adult Pacu can reach up to three and a half feet in length and up to 88 pounds.

And, in case you're interested, the flavor of Pacu is similar to tilapia or trout, boasting a sweet and mild flavor.

These guys are native to South America, so how did Texas find one in one of her lakes?

Why Was it Seen in Texas?

It's believed that this specific fish was dumped in the lake by an owner who no longer had the room to house it in their aquarium.

The organization that took the fish for safekeeping, the Lake Meredith Aquatic & Wildlife Museum, also issued an announcement to all fish owners.

They kindly asked that you keep in mind the fact that some fish are invasive to certain environments. They also stated that the pacu fish is known to attack and even eat other fish, not to mention they can potentially spread parasites and diseases.

So, if you ever think about dumping your fish into a local river or lake, look them in the teeth and rethink your decision...
