Shame On You: This Might Be the Most Heartless Thing You Can Do

I know you’ve probably seen plenty about this recently, but I want to make something very clear as Christmas approaches: Animals are not presents.

When thinking of ‘fun’ or ‘cute’ gifts to get your kid, far too many people think it would be a great idea to get a pet. While this can work out positively for those that are responsible pet owners, it doesn’t always work out that way.  

There are far too many times where that cute little kitten, puppy, hamster, or any other animal is given to a child that has no desire or knowledge to properly care for the animal. Or, it is all fun and games while they are small, but once the pet becomes an adult, they “just aren’t as cute anymore.” This leads to the animal being mistreated, neglected, and often dumped on the street.  

If you haven’t noticed, Lubbock has a severe stray animal problem. This is due to a combination of things including pet owners not getting their pets fixed and irresponsible people dumping their animal and leaving it to fend for themselves.  

Some of these animals manage to make it to a shelter or rescue, but some don’t. They are then left to starve, get hit by a car, or breed with other stray animals, creating an even bigger problem.  

I beg of you, please be responsible. Animals are not gifts, just because your kid wants a puppy doesn’t mean they need one, and make sure you really want a pet and are truly ready to be responsible for one before you get one. They are long-term commitments that deserve love, happiness, and a good home that will properly care for them for their whole life.
