Water Deposits Now Required For Some Lubbock Residents
Life just got a little tougher for some Lubbock residents, and for some who wish to be.
Pay Up!
It may have slipped your radar but back in October the City Of Lubbock took steps to implement a new water deposit program. This program would require some people asking for new service to pony up $150, or $550 for businesses (or anything that is "non-residential". Also, if there's a disconnect, you may be asked to pay that amount to continue service (other fees may apply as well).
Hard Living
All of this could be tough news for Lubbock residents who are currently on the struggle bus, or trying to move out into the world for the first time. That extra $150 on top of rent and other deposits just might be a backbreaker for some. These fees are implemented for people who don't have good credit, and/or can't provide a history of paying utility bills in the past.
Bad Debt
The "refundable" fees are being put into place so that the City Of Lubbock isn't stuck with an unpaid bill. I guess in 2025 we no longer put trust first, and are on a "money-talks" type program. It's understandable, but it hurts. No grocery stores says, "Come take all the groceries you want and pay us at the end of the money" (they actually did once upon a time, but that was long, long ago).
Some Hope
The City has put in some protections for victims of domestic violence and seniors. Those two affected groups can move forward without a deposit. There are a few other rules involved in this new process, which can be read here.
