KILLEEN, TEXAS- A 14-year-old female student at Roy J. Smith Middle School, roughly 74 miles from the state's capital, was fatally stabbed by another 14-year-old female student last Monday, leading to a school campus lockdown where more than 1000 students were moved to a local church for a unification process.

The incident occurred just before 11:30 am during a "heated dispute" between the two students. So far, there have been no reports on what led to the argument, but it's presumed that an altercation between the two girls led one to stab the other, who was later rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to the wound.

The school district announced Monday afternoon that all classes at the middle school would be postponed until after Spring Break on March 24th. They also said there would be support services available to staff and children upon their return.

Texas has seen a rise in cases of violence between students in schools, as well as violence between students and teachers, over the past 10 years. Some areas that are trending in the wrong direction among students include: experiencing sexual violence at the hands of someone at school, skipping school because of safety concerns, and being threatened with a weapon on school grounds.

Have you felt an uptick in violence at the schools in your Texas community? I'd like to hear from you. Leave me a comment on this article or reach me at Chrissy.Covington@townsquaremedia.com, and let's have a chat.
