A Tribute to the Weird Little Businesses That Somehow Survive Forever in Lubbock
Every city has them, but Lubbock seems to specialize in them. You'll notice it especially when you drive down 34th Street.
You know the places. The tiny businesses that are tucked in between new buildings. Stores with faded signs that haven't changed since the 90s. Places that somehow survive economic crashes, construction zones, online shopping, and whatever else the universe has thrown at them over the years.
Honestly, we'd probably riot if they disappeared.
We Have Plenty
Lubbock is truly full of weird little businesses, some of which look permanently closed until you pull the door open and realize they've been doing their thing successfully for 40+ years.
On 9/10, a hand-painted sign is involved. Sometimes, a dusty old Coke machine out front. Their hours of operation are more like suggestions, not commitments.
The moment you walk in, you realize these types of places have something that big chains don't: heart and personality.

Like...A Whole Lot
I could be a hole-in-the-wall repair shop with three generations of tools hanging on the wall. Perhaps it's a music store that's been run by the same person since the 1980s. Restaurants that don't bother with new menus and instead opt for using a pen to cross off items they no longer sell.
These little places have become part of our city's identity.
How Do They Survive?
The weirdest part about it is that nobody under the age of 40 can really explain how they've managed to stay open all this time. You'll drive by on a Tuesday afternoon and wonder how a store that only sells specific stuff like vacuum cleaner belts or RC car parts is even able to pay rent in 2026.
And yet, they somehow endure.
Loyalty is Key
Truthfully, I think it comes down to loyal customers who choose these types of businesses because they feel real. They aren't polished or fancy. They aren't especially curated for fabulous Instagram photos. They aren't trying to become a "once in a lifetime experience."
They simply exist exactly as they always have, and there's something really comforting about that.
What Makes Them Special?
In the modern world, every shopping center is starting to look nearly identical, but these little businesses really give Lubbock some character and remind us that not every place needs all the bells and whistles to have great quality.
Sometimes, all you really need is a flickering OPEN sign, a couple of bells that jingle when you walk in, and a cashier who smiles and calls you "darlin."
Long live the weird and amazing little mom and pop shops in Lubbock. May you stay open forever, and please, never change. <3
