High-End Dog Food Sold In Texas Recalled For Potential Salmonella And Listeria

Do you have your dog on a special diet?

For some pets, it's a medical necessity to feed them certain foods or prepare their food yourself.

Some folks understandably want to improve their pet's longevity and are willing to pay for premium food in the hopes it will help.

However, if you've been shelling out the big bucks for a particular brand of fermented raw pet food, you'll want to check the lot numbers asap.

According to the FDA, ANSWERS brand food is under recall due to potential contamination by Salmonella AND Listeria. Both pathogens can cause serious, sometimes fatal illnesses in the humans that handle the dog's food.

Listeria is typically mild in dogs, but Salmonella can cause severe dehydration and even death. Of course, both are dangerous to immunocompromised individuals, including dogs.

Luckily, no illnesses have been reported to date.

The products that are being recalled, "out of an abundance of caution" are ANSWERS Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, ANSWERS Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and ANSWERS Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs.

Of course, if you notice your dog having any symptoms like lethargy, decreased appetite, diarrhea, bloody stool, or fever, you should take them to the vet, and if you experience any symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

If you have any of the food that meets the recall criteria, you are encouraged to handle the package with gloves, place it in a sealed container, and throw it away in a manner that keeps wild animals and pets from getting into the food.
