No Surprise. New Survey Says That Lubbock Is No Fun

Do you need to be told that Lubbock isn't a very fun town? 

The Town

Lubbock is, let's just say, a little slow. I guess if you like college sports and trying new restaurants (that die after six months) then you can stay busy, but there just isn't a heck of a lot to do here. Don't shoot the messenger, "Nothing else to do..." is a quote describing why Lubbock used to have a very vibrant music scene.  I'm not 100% sure what we need as far as entertainment offerings go, but "more" of anything seems to be a good place to start.

The Survey

Wallethub put together 65, that's sixty-five metrics to determine "The Most Fun City In America 2024" and Lubbock came up a little short. Those sixty-five metrics were weighed and measured and were boiled down to three categories, "Entertainment & Recreation", "Nightlife & Parties", and "Costs". We did rather poorly in all three categories coming in at #131 out of 182 on the list. I am very surprised we weren't elevated by the "Costs" category. While we did best there, our rank was #85 overall there.

The Competition

We were beat in the town by cities like #124 Amarillo, #118 Mesa, Arizona, and even #122 Spokane, Washington. I lived in Spokane, Washington and the best I can say about the city is that it's uh....remote. "Nightlife & Parties" is where Lubbock really tanked and I must say, that Lubbock used to have some really great clubs...and now they're all gone. In short, Lubbock's nightlife is as weak as 3.2% beer (remember that?).

Is There Hope?

Who knows if Lubbock would even embrace a more vibrant entertainment scene? It seems to me that the Buddy Holly Hall is really giving culture a shot in the arm. It also seems like there is a trend towards artisan type markets at least to the point where we may have more of those than the town can sustain. The public art is cool. I guess what I'm trying to say is, there are some cool things here, just not a lot of them. And lastly, consider this, Lubbock is a place where people from smaller towns come to have some fun. I guess compared to some place like Shallowater, Lubbock is just a hoot and a holler.
