I have a tradition of buying a couple of scratch-off tickets anytime I go out of town, even if "out-of-town" is as close as Lamesa or Plainview.

I'm not sure why I don't buy them when I'm home here in Lubbock, I suppose it just hasn't felt lucky yet, but after reviewing the data, I might change my mind.

Lubbock has had many winners take home hundreds and thousands of dollars. It's public information that you can drill down using a nifty dataset complied by the Texas Open Data Portal.

However, I was curious about who, where, and when Lubbock folks took home the big bucks, that is, a million or more dollars.

So I set the parameters to tell me the date the prize was won, the location they purchased the ticket, and which game they played (a scratch-off, Powerball, Mega Millions, etc.).

I also set it to only people who listed themselves as living in Lubbock County.

Unless they chose (probably quite wisely) to remain anonymous, their first and last name was listed in the data set.

For our purposes, I just included their first name, as I don't want anybody to potentially bother a family member or friend over it (although they probably already have).

The Texas State Lottery was approved in November 1991 after the Texas Legislature and Texans voters. The first person to ever buy a ticket was then Texas Governor Ann Richards a year later. She did not win a million or more dollars.

Since its inception, the Texas Lottery has paid 25% of its revenue to the Foundation School Fund, which supports Texas schools.

Here are the eleven Lubbockites that have scored big from the lottery. Will I be adding your name to the list next?

Don't Play These Numbers If You Want To Win Big Lotto Bucks

Statistically speaking, all lottery numbers are created equal, right?

Wrong.
