How Property Taxes Are Turning Texans Into Beekeepers

Rising property taxes have led some Texans to beekeeping. Sounds strange, but it's true. Fun fact: Thanks to a 2012 law, beekeeping qualifies for an agricultural exemption on your property taxes and can save you thousands of dollars a year.

How It Works

According to a third-generation beekeeper in Parker County, it doesn't even require YOU to be hands-on with bees. All you have to do is pay someone around $2000 a year to come out to your property once a month to tend to the bees. In turn, you can save yourself $6000 to $8000 in property taxes per year. Spend a little, save a lot.

The exemption is unfortunately not an option for every homeowner as the law requires you to have a least 5 acres. The required number of hives on your property is set by the county that you live in, but is typically around 6 hives.
