Unique Lubbock Wellness Business Is Calling It Quits, Cites ‘Market Forces’
A unique Lubbock business has decided to close over the next six months after serving the Lubbock community for over fourteen years. Escape Your Body Float Center (2508 1st Pl) announced the decision this past Saturday.
What Are Float Tanks? Are Float Tanks Available In Lubbock?
If you've never experienced a float tank- also known as a sensory deprivation chamber- it is truly a unique experience. Some people (like me) love the experience, while others may initially find it frightening.

A float tank is kind of like a very large bathtub with a lid, equipped with lights on the inside. The water used has a massive amount of Epsom salt* dissolved in it, making the person lying inside very buoyant.
*Epsom salt contains magnesium, an essential mineral for proper body function. Magnesium can be absorbed through the skin, so you are getting a nice dose of it while floating.
The person inside can opt to leave the lights on, but for a truly "sensory-deprived" experience, it is recommended to turn them off. When you allow yourself total darkness and silence in that buoyant, temperature-neutral state, what follows is a little difficult to describe.
What Does It Feel Like To Float In a Sensory Deprivation Tank?
The most prominent feeling I had was of being outrageously comfortable. I have some back issues, and my spine was immediately thanking me for the break from having to work or have any pressure on it at all.

After a couple of minutes (I think, it is very difficult to gauge time), I became very aware of every tiny movement my body was making. That might sound scary, but since I was so comfy it was a joyous experience- it felt mildly trippy, and I felt wonderfully alive.
My first and only float tank experience was here in Lubbock at Escape Your Body, so if the experience sounds interesting to you, I recommend you book while you still have a chance.
When Is Escape Your Body Float Center Closing? Why is Escape Your Body Closing?
According to a Facebook post by Escape Your Body, the center will close, "within the next six months." I imagine bookings made now with affect that window. The center cited "market forces" for the closure.
The center also warned that folks with gift cards and prepaid sessions should use them as soon as possible, because refunds will not be possible.
We wish Escape Your Body the best of luck; perhaps with enough support, they may not have to close after all.
