Remember when dollar stores were... a dollar? Now, most dollar stores begin prices at $1.25 (like Dollar Tree) and have items that are a few dollars, like up to $7 at Dollar Tree.

With the closure of all 99 Cent stores in Texas, Dollar Tree has less competition and can set prices as these please- so long as consumers are willing and/or able to afford to buy items at these new costs.

There are several items I like to buy at dollar stores- snacks like chips, candies, and sodas (they tend to have flavors I can't find anywhere else) and fun stuff like hair clips and stickers.

There's even one item I will ONLY buy at the dollar store- gift bags. They are such a rip-off everywhere else!

In the past, I have been in a "financially challenged" situation- and had a limited budget to buy items. Even though you might save buying in bulk or better quality, sometimes you have to buy what you can afford.

Those times I looked to to the dollar store for items like dried beans, cans of pasta sauce, etc. And I'll still purchase those items there, so long as the expiration dates are good and they aren't actually cheaper at the grocery store.

So are there items you should never buy at dollar stores? "Never" is a strong word, and sometimes dollar stores do get incredible deals on bulk purchases, and pass savings down to you.

However, there are plenty of items you should strongly consider not buying at dollar stores because they could be ineffective, easily broken, or simply not a good deal.

Here's a list of the items you might want to think twice before picking up during your next dollar store trip:
