It wasn't that long ago that Lubbock had two Denny's locations.

Change Happens

When I was a kid there was a restaurant that we loved going to for breakfast called "Sambos". Sambos was possibly the most racist restaurant concept ever, and I'll just leave it at that. The point is, times change, tastes change, and restaurants have to change with the times. Then there's the fact that there is increased competition and it can be very hard to keep a restaurant chain afloat.

The Chain Downsizes

Denny's has announced that it is closing 150 stores by 2025. While 150 is a significant number, the chain had 1,586 stores out of September of this year. I'm not 100% sure of what is going on with thier business model, but being down to 1400+ locations sounds like they're still doing alright.

Here in Lubbock

It was just May of this year that we noticed that the Denny's on Avenue Q had closed. It seemed odd because all of the new student housing nearby and that the restaurant was in reasonably good shape (you can see pictures right here). Admittedly it was located in one of the sketchier areas of Lubbock, but that area has shown a lot of signs of improving.

What's Left

This leaves us with one Denny's location at 4718 Slide Road. Could it be in danger of closing? It's really hard to speculate. Denny's has always been a restaurant of convenience and not necessarily something you crave. Then again, they currently have an "Afterlife" menu inspired by Beetlejuice that does look very tasty. The one thing I can say is that I have never, ever had a bad meal at either Denny's location, whether it was 3 a.m. or 3 p.m.  Let's cross our fingers and hope they've gotten stronger with one location.
