Texas Tech will open its doors to the public to honor women who shaped the university and achieved greatness under the Red Raider flag.

Women being honored for their greatness this year include: Former Lady Raiders basketball coach Marsha Sharp; Maxine Fry, the first female student body president; Hortense Williams Dixon, the first African-American to receive a doctorate from Tech; Anne Lynch, the first female masked rider; and Edna Gott, who was the first woman to have tenure in the Department of Economics.

Each of these women will be recognized March 9 in the University Library. The event will open at 3:30 p.m. with a ceremony where Terri Duncan, wife of the Texas Tech University System Chancellor, will speak about the importance of celebrating women's history.

The exhibit will run during normal library hours and will continue to be open through May.

"I think most people don’t realize how involved women were in establishing this university," Lynn Whitfield, the university archivist said. "Through the diligence and dedication of the women featured in this exhibit, Texas Tech became and remains an institution dedicated to providing an excellent education and nurturing environment for women."

Part of the exhibit will be located in the Southwest Collection building and artifacts will be housed in the Croslin Room.
