Tik Tok challenges come and go with regular frequency. Some are harmless fun.  Some are deadly.  Some are just plain weird.  Some days,  I could swear I've noticed a rhythm to it. Other days it just seems random.  In that way, I guess TikTok is quite a great reflection of modern life.

With that in mind, there have been a fresh rash of dangerous TikTok challenges this year.  The latest, the Nyquil chicken challenge has aroused warnings from the F.D.A. I mean who can imagine why anyone would want to cook chicken basted in Nyquil.  Although I must admit, as bad as my chicken cooking skills are, many in my family have suggested I baste my chicken in immodium.

Please don't do that.

When it comes to dangerous Tik Tok challenges, users are being urged to flag any dangerous challenges they run across. A Tik Tok spokesman recently told Britain's Sky News

“Our community guidelines make clear what kind of content is not acceptable on our platform, and this includes content that encourages, promotes or glorifies dangerous behaviour that might lead to injury.”

Yet, here they are. Back in December, a number of parents in San Angelo became alarmed about vague threats to schools that were happening on TikTok.  None were specific to schools in our area, but it was enough for the school district to issue a statement on the issue.

What ARE the most dangerous TikTok of 2022 so far?

The Blackout Challenge was first introduced in 2008. The CDC says this challenge has been linked to more than 80 deaths when was first introduced.  This challenge involves holding your breath until you pass out for lack of oxygen.  As recently as August, a 12-year-old in the UK died after trying the challenge. Tik Tok is facing many lawsuits over this.

Other dangerous Tik Tok challenges you should avoid and report include the Milk Crate challenge and Orbeez Shooting. This challenge involved shooting water beads at unsuspecting people. This challenge landed a lot of perpetrators in jail.

The Kia Challenge was more annoying and inconvenient. This challenge involved a video showing how a usb connection could be used to circumvent the ignition locks on certain Hyundai and Kia models.  This lead to many stolen vehicles, including a rash of Kia thefts here in San Angelo, that may or may not be related.

The newest challenge arousing the anxiety of school districts across Texas and worldwide is the "One Chip Challenge." This one involves eating and entire Paqui Tortilla Chip featuring Carolina Reaper, the hottest pepper in the world as waiting as long as possible before drinking or eating anything else.

Doctors warn this can cause serious stomach and intestinal upset and could lead to serious long-term consequences.

No doubt TikTok is here to stay. If my totally unscientific observations of recent TikTok behavior is true, we're about to enter a new dangerous challenge phase. When it comes to TikTok, many times the best way to meet the challenge is to ignore it.
