It's another short week with New Year's Day on Thursday and the temptation to call in sick on Friday for an extra long weekend is there.

Career Builder has some interesting statistics about calling in sick.  If you're already a boss or a manager you might have your suspicions about anyone calling in sick after a Holiday.  Here's some interesting numbers their polling found.

- 1 in 4 employers have caught an employee faking sick through social media.  Many people inadvertently give themselves away by posting.

- 1 in 5 have fired an employee for calling in sick with a fake excuse.

- 31 percent of employers say they have checked to see if an employee was telling the truth in one way or another after calling in sick.

-15 percent of employers drove past the employee's house.

Now, we also need to realize this IS the flu season and IF you are legitimately feeling sick, your co-workers, and hopefully your boss will appreciate it if you stay home!

According to the report December is the most popular time of year for employees to call in sick, according to 21 percent of employers, followed by January (17 percent) and February (14 percent).

A couple weeks ago Everythinglubbock.com did this report about the flu seasons striking early and hitting us hard.  I know here at Townsquare Media we've had a good part of the staff feeling the effects of the flu.

The bottom line is that if you do take some time off this week for being sick, legitimately or not, expect your boss to be a little bit skeptical.
