This week's episode of Weird and Wonderful West Texas features Lubbock's scary-good Halloween attraction, Nightmare on 19th Street.

It's the time of year that a lot of us look for haunted houses, trick or treat, trunk or treat, fall festivals, pumpkin patches and corn mazes. There's one, however, that trumps them all.

Nightmare on 19th Street is the only Halloween theme park in West Texas. The local attraction has become a must-see for Lubbock residents and even people in nearby cities.

The popular Halloween attraction started its 9th season Sept. 26 with a preview night and officially opens its doors Oct. 2-3 for a Grand Opening weekend.

We talked with Wes Nessman, co-creator of Nightmare on 19th Street, about where the idea for the attraction originated.

Nessman, who is also the Brand Manager for Lubbock's Rock Station 94.5 FMX, said the idea came to him after listeners repeatedly called his request line and asked if there were any good haunted houses in the area. There weren't.

So Nessman and a business partner started the process to create and build one. Now, in 2015, Nightmare on 19th Street is a full-fledged Halloween theme park with four attractions, food, vendors and lots of screams.

Over 100 actors put their hearts and souls into the event each October, scaring the daylights out of patrons. The makeup for the actors is no small feat, sometimes taking up to five hours before the gates open to apply all the gore, blood and hanging tissue that makes it all so real.

Nightmare on 19th Street isn't recommended for children under the age of 12, but as Nessman puts it: "ultimately, it's up to the parents to decide."
