Nearly one week after thousands of Texas Tech fans shouted obscenities at Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, the school has offered something resembling an apology.

Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec framed the chant, which erupted during the 4th quarter of the Red Raiders' losing effort against the Oklahoma Sooners last Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium, as a blemish on the school.

"Texas Tech University deeply regrets the behavior of some students and fans at Saturday night’s football game against the University of Oklahoma. The behavior displayed is not representative of Texas Tech, its students, faculty, staff and alumni," Schovanec said in a statement, adding: "The Office of the President is proactively working alongside the Department of Athletics, the Center for Campus Life and the Student Government Association to seek solutions and actions to prevent unacceptable conduct at all future events."

Monday at Texas Tech's weekly press conference, head coach Kliff Kingsbury shared his thoughts on the chant. While he loved the "charged atmosphere" of The Jones Saturday night, Kingsbury urged fans to stay above that sort of behavior in the future.

"I understand emotions come into play and we love the charged atmosphere, but obviously that’s not what you want to be portraying for our university, in that stadium and our program, so we have to stay above it next time," Kingsbury told the media.
