Red Raiders Tear Through Iowa State, 66-31 [Game Photos]

Texas Tech got off to the fast start they needed to put up a season high 66 points in their blowout of the Iowa State Cyclones.

Receiving the opening kickoff, Patrick Mahomes and company settled for a field goal on the game's first possession. But the Red Raiders quickly got a shot in the arm following a Tevin Madison interception on Tech's first defensive sequence.

The interception set the Red Raiders up on the doorstep of the redzone, and three short plays later Deandre Washington marched in to the endzone from seven yards out to give Tech a two possession lead. The extra point was good, and Texas Tech had a 10-0 lead five minutes into the ballgame.

Iowa State responded to the early adversity like champs on their second possession. A 77-yard drive, capped by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sam Richardson to Quenton Bundrage, made the score 10-7.

If you went to refresh your beverage following the Iowa State score you probably missed Texas Tech's equally champion like response to the Cyclones touchdown.

After a touchback on the ensuing kickoff, Patrick Mahomes connected with human highlight reel Jakeem Grant on the first play of the series for a quick strike 75 yard touchdown.

Fifteen game seconds after the Cyclones made it 10-7, Tech was back up two scores 17-7 much to the enjoyment of a raucous Red Raider crowd at the Jones.

Much like a "shut down inning" in baseball, the Red Raiders defense stood up following the Jakeem Grant touchdown, forcing an Iowa State three and out on the Cyclones third offensive series.

With one quarter in the books the Red Raiders led the Cyclones 17-7 but Iowa State was in the midst of a second scoring drive.

On the first play of the second quarter, Sam Richardson would again find Quenton Bundrage on a 36 yard pass and catch that left the Cyclones sittin' pretty at the one yard line.

One snap later, Iowa State RB Joshua Thomas found pay-dirt from a yard out to make the score 17-14 Tech with 14:18 to go before the half.

True to form, Texas Tech would answer the Iowa State touchdown with a scoring drive of their own.

A 9 play drive covering 75 yards and lasting 2:16 was highlighted by a beautiful 33 yard completion to Reginald Davis in the back of the endzone for another Red Raider touchdown.  To the surprise of many who saw the replay, the touchdown was upheld after review,  and Tech again had a two possession lead, 24-14.

As the Red Raiders had done all day, it was Iowa State's turn to come up with a quick answer following an opponents scoring drive, but the drive fizzled and was capped off by a missed 40 yard field goal off the foot of Cyclones kicker Cole Netten.

With the ball and a 24-14 lead, the Red Raiders went back to work on offense.

Already floundering, Iowa State's defense didn't seem to have an answer for Texas Tech's relentless offensive attack, and the result of the drive would prove it.

A dump off pass to Deandre Washington at the 49 yard line turned in to a 49 yard touchdown, putting the exclamation point on a 7 play 77 yard touchdown drive that lasted 2:27. Tech was up big, 31-14 with nearly half of the second quarter still to play.

Another Iowa State punt gave the Red Raiders the ball at their own 24 yard line, but the 'play without thinking' philosophy cemented in to Kliff Kingsbury's crew would yield points yet again.

Another 2:17 would tick off the clock in a Red Raiders 7 play 76 yard touchdown drive, that saw Jakeem Grant catch his 2nd touchdown of the day, this one from 37 yards out. Texas Tech 38 Iowa State 14, with 4 minutes still to play in the first half.

A good confidence boost going in to halftime, the Cyclones put together a 75 yard touchdown drive leaving only 60 ticks left in the first half.

Joshua Thomas scored the Iowa State touchdown from a yard out, his second of the day making the score 38-21 at the intermission.

After both teams traded punts coming out of halftime, Iowa State netted a 20 yard FG from Cole Netten to make the score 38-24.

It was at this time that Texas Tech returned to their first half form and commenced phase 2 of operation Iowa State onslaught. Scoring 21 unanswered points Texas Tech opened up a 59-24 lead that was highlighted by a litany of big plays.

Justin Stockton tallied a 54 yard touchdown with an explosive run after the Iowa State field goal before it became the Jonathon Giles show at Jones AT&T Stadium.

A J.J. Gaines interception of Sam Richardson on Iowa State's ensuing possession after the Stockton score set Tech up brilliantly at the Cyclones 29 yard line. 2:19 would tick off the clock before Patrick Mahomes found Giles from 3 yards out for a touchdown, moving the score to 52-24.

Another stalled Cyclone drive resulting in a punt gave Tech the ball back as whole sale substitutions took place. Back-up quarterback Davis Webb entered the game and took over right where Mahomes left off, connecting with Jonathon Giles for 21 yards and a touchdown. Giles second TD in mere minutes. The two play 41 yard drive took just 26 seconds. Tech 59 Iowa State 24.

Still not done making an example of the Cyclones, Texas Tech's final touchdown of the ballgame came on 53 yard run from the relatively unknown Demarcus Felton. Many young players made an impression in Saturday's waxing off Iowa State, but maybe none more memorable than Felton after he split the defense to cap off the 7 play 91 yard scoring drive. Tech 66 Iowa State 24.

Iowa State would score a garbage time touchdown as the crowd at Jones AT&T scampered for the exits in an attempt to beat the post-game traffic. QB Joel Lanning who came in to replace Sam Richardson found the endzone from 3 yards out to give Iowa State some pride points, but the game was beyond out of reach for the Cyclones, and ended a few snaps later.

Texas Tech is now 4-2 (1-2 in Big 12) this season, matching last year's win total for the season.
