Texas Tech Defeats San Diego State 6-3, Wins Series

Texas Tech got four strong innings out of Corey Taylor, who picked up his first win of the season and Dominic Moreno picked up his third save of the season as Texas Tech defeated  No.28 San Diego State 6-3 Sunday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory secured the series win over the Aztecs.

SDSU won the opener 9-0 Friday before the Red Raiders stormed back on Saturday, winning 11-0 and taking Sunday's rubber game.

Taylor, a senior right-hander from Kennedale, allowed an earned run while giving up four hits a run and two walks with five strikeouts.

Taylor retired the first six batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings with a pair of strikeouts to start his relief outing. SDSU's only run off Taylor came in the seventh as an error led to the run.

Taylor leads Big 12 in ERA (0.00) and opponent batting average (.115).

Moreno pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to pick up the save.

It was Moreno’s fourth scoreless appearance of the season and 14^th of his career.

San Diego State starting pitcher Mark Seyler (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk

Offensively, Tech (14-5) was led by Eric Gutierrez (2-for-4). The Junior 1B gave the Red Raiders a 3-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run double. Tech capped off its four-run frame on Quinn Carpenter’ (1-for-3) RBI double down the left-field line to score Gutierrez.

The Red Raider pitching staff had its streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings pitched snapped in the fourth as the Aztecs cut Tech's lead to two runs scoring a pair of runs off Tech starting pitcher Dylan Dusek with a single and double to start the inning.

Dusek took a no decision going four innings allowing two runs on four hits without allowing a walk.

Texas Tech will return home to face Oral Roberts (9-8) for a midweek series with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
