I think the kids doing this had no idea what they were doing. In hindsight, pretty messed up.

This past Friday Smithson Valley took the field to take on Wagner high school. Before Smithson Valley came out they ran through a banner made by some students. The banner had on it a jet, which is apart of Wagners logo. It also said on it, 'What goes up, must come down.' What could be so bad about that?

Wagner high school is named after Karen Wagner, a United States Army officer who was working at the Pentagon and died after the building was struck by a hijacked commercial airliner on Sept. 11, 2001. So having a plane coming down, with a school named after a girl that died in those attacks is pretty messed up.

Like I said at the beginning, I truly believe these students had no idea the school was named after that girl for those reasons. Comal ISD superintendent Andrew Kim issued an apology Monday through a school district spokesman.

"We are aware that some in the Wagner High School community found the Smithson Valley run-through banner at last Friday's game to be insensitive to the school's namesake, Karen Wagner," Kim said in a statement. "We sincerely apologize to the Wagner community for this. The banner was in no way intended to be disrespectful, as the students who were involved in the creation of the banner did not know of the connection between the school's namesake and the tragic events of 9/11. Again, we apologize to the Wagner community."
