A professor who was shot and killed Monday (September 15) at Delta State University in Mississippi was previously an instructor at Texas Tech.

According to Dr. Ethan Schmidt’s online profile at Delta State, he taught for six years at TTU before going to Delta State University in 2013.

As an Associate Professor, Schmidt taught American history with a focus on interaction between indigenous Americans and European colonists .

Dr. Sean Cunningham, the chair of the History Department, told KAMC News Schmidt's academic passion was early American history - especially when it came to Native Americans.

"I am deeply saddened, as is the entire Department of History by the awful news of Ethan’s passing," said Dr. Cunningham. "He was an outstanding teacher, scholar and friend. Even more importantly, he was an incredible husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ethan’s family. We are simply crushed."
