On the retro rack we go back to 1973. It was on this day, April 28th of that year that Charlie Rich had the number one song in the land with "Behind Closed Doors".

It also crossed over into the Top 20 on the pop charts. Rich's sound was called "Countrypolitan, a country-pop mixture. The song "Behind Closed Doors" was the title track from his 1973 album.

This song established him as a country music star. The song itself won three awards from the Country Music Association that year: Best Male Vocalist, Album of the Year and Single of the Year.

The album was also certified gold. Rich won a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and he took home four ACM awards.

Rich died in his sleep in 1995 of a blood clot in his lung. He was just 62.

But in 1973, Charlie Rich had everyone singing "Behind Closed Doors".
