Prosperity Pastor Got It All Wrong

I was stunned when a certain large church in Houston did not voluntarily open its doors to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This “church” Is a very large structure that has the ability to hold thousands of people, but it was not initially open to the victims of the hurricane.

The way mainstream and social media went after this church and its ‘Prosperity Doctrine’ pastor was brutal, to say the least. And they did deserve that level of brutality from the media.

The church and its leader made excuses about flooding, when, in fact, there was minimal flooding to the facility in the basement. But they did offer prayers, which might make someone feel warm and fuzzy for a few minutes, but doesn’t help them get their lives back together.

After some research, it didn’t look like funds or assistance were being offered to the displaced by this church or its “Prosperity Pastor”.

But what amazed me more was the “Prosperity Pastor” stated that the City of Houston didn’t ask for them to open as a shelter.

The City of Houston didn’t ask.

Why did the City of Houston need to ask?

Plenty of other churches, synagogues, and mosques in and around Houston opened their doors to ANYONE who was in need. The City of Houston didn’t ask them, they just did it, because they knew people needed help during this crisis.

After all the backlash, the church is now open as a shelter and donations are being accepted, several days after the fact. I guess something is better than nothing.

I am not poo-pooing on religion or any one’s particular beliefs, but part of the Christian doctrine is to help those in need whenever possible. And that is the problem with some of these mega churches and the people that run them. They take and take, but rarely give when it is really needed.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of religious groups doing great work out there, and they should be commended, but this one church took the wrong approach. And when their approach went sour with the public, the “Prosperity Pastor” had to backtrack on everything that had been said and done up until that point. Heaven forbid if his “donations” should suffer because of this.

What it boils down to is this, using the excuse that you didn’t do anything because the City of Houston didn’t ask is as thin as a single sheet of toilet paper.
