By the time the end of the second quarter occurred in Saturday's Texas Tech game against Stephen F. Austin, Patrick Mahomes sliced and diced through the Lumberjack defense for five touchdowns. In the first half, Mahomes went 23/34 passing for 407 yards and three touchdowns, plus 10 rushes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Giles was Mahomes' leading receiver in the first half with four receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. On one of Mahomes' rushing touchdowns he faked a pass to deke a defender before scampering into the end zone.

Texas Tech went into halftime with a 43-3 lead over Stephen F. Austin, and Mahomes continued to play into the third quarter.
