Patrick Mahomes has never had an off season as a football player. He's only started as a quarterback since his Junior year of high school. That's four seasons, and only three complete ones.

He's always played baseball. He played basketball in high school. In fact, it can probably be said he wasn't ever considered a "football player" until late in his high school career. Everything Patrick Mahomes has accomplished has basically been sheer talent. He's gifted. Mahomes excels naturally.

This year though, he didn't rush to basketball practice the day after football ended. He didn't play summer league baseball. He didn't split time between Kliff Kingsbury and Tim Tadlock. He didn't have to adjust his arm slot in his first day back at fall practice.

For the first time in Patrick Mahomes' life, he's just a football player.

Mahomes took this new found free time and dedicated himself to the craft of being a quarterback. Already one of the best in the nation, he's learned how to read defenses better and got to spend an entire uninterrupted spring with Kliff Kingsbury.

Coach Kingsbury said: “I think the sky is the limit. If he’s as good as what I saw this spring."

Mahomes is excited to take this extra work and "break every record and win every game." He also used his spring to learn new tricks, like the no-look pass that he broke out during team drills.

When asked when he was going to bust out the new passing technique, all he could say was: "If I do do it, I better complete it." Couldn't have said that better myself, Patrick.

Another thing that Mahomes has acquired over the spring is an affinity for weightlifting. He credits Houston transfer Luke Stice for making him a "meathead in the weight room." It's always a good sign when the team leader is willing to learn and adapt to what will make him better.

Mahomes has dealt with injuries in the previous two seasons. Adding bulk will allow him to do things like this:

An interesting not also is Mahomes listing the biggest difference between the 2015 defense and the 2016 defense is the confidence that that side of the ball will be playing with. I'm not sure where they found the confidence, but I hope it helps.
