With all the cookouts planned and the media frenzy around the Indy 500 on Monday, the real occasion seems to be overshadowed. But as we're enjoying our family and friends, hopefully we won't forget the meaning of Memorial Day. It was formerly known as "Decoration Day" to honor U.S. citizens who died while on military service. It dates back to the Civil War era to honor Union and Confederate soldiers. According to Wikipedia, the American Flag on that day is half-staff until noon, then, "raised by the living, to not let their sacrifice be in vain."
