An officer in Lubbock's Burglary Suppression Unit performing a traffic stop Monday (Feb. 16) was dragged by a suspect who attempted to flee in his car.

According to a news release from the Lubbock Police Department, the officer, Corporal Goswick, stopped a 2003 Saturn Vue for driving on the wrong side of the road. During the stop, a female acquaintance of the driver approached the passenger side of the Saturn Vue and got in the car but did not close the door.

When Cpl. Goswick noticed the driver struggling to find his driver's license in his pant pockets and opened the door for him to step out of the vehicle, he saw a jar full of what appeared to be marijuana buds.

The officer attempted to take the driver into custody. However, the man put the car in drive and took off while the Cpl. Goswick still had a hold of him.

Cpl. Goswick was dragged for a short distance as he struggled with the driver for control of the vehicle. Eventually, the officer managed to gain control and took the driver into custody.

Cpl. Goswick received minor injuries. During the incident, the female passenger sitting in the front seat fell out of the car. She also suffered minor injuries.

During a pat down of the driver, Cpl. Goswick located a handgun in the same pant pocket he was reaching into for driver’s license.

The driver, identified as Randy Cantrell (25), was arrested and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center. Cantrell has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Possession of Marijuana. No attorney has been listed for Cantrell as of Tuesday afternoon.
