Sunshine Stanek (pictured) has filed to run in the 2018 Republican Primary for District Attorney. Stanek has worked in the Lubbock County District Attorney's Office for her whole career, which started in mid-2000. Stanek is currently the First Assistant Criminal District Attorney, serving directly behind the current District Attorney, Matt Powell (R).

Powell officially became Lubbock County District Attorney in December 2005 and has received little-to-no opposition in the ensuing elections after he took office.  It is currently unknown if Powell will file to run in the 2018 Republican Primary before Monday's deadline. If Powell decides not to run for re-election, his term would end in January 2019 when the November 2018 general election winners are sworn into office.

Concerning Stanek's background, she earned her Bachelor's Degree from Texas Christian University in 1996 and graduated from the Texas Tech School of Law in May 2000.

Stanek has been married to Shawn Stanek for 19 years and the couple has two children. Stanek states she is also involved in the community in a number of ways including currently serving on the Junior League of Lubbock's Executive Board and the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors.
