Almost four months after the Lubbock City Council was set to consider proposed changes to some speed limits, the council approved the First Reading of changes to the Speed Limit Ordinance.

The changes are for specific sections of streets rather than overall large-scale changes.

The biggest change is the reduction of the speed limit on Frankford Avenue from 98th Street to 114th Street. The first half-mile south of 98th Street will become 45 mph and the last half-mile to 114th Street will be reduced from 55 mph to 50 mph.

A section of FM 1585 straddling University Avenue will be reduced to 55 mph and University Avenue south of FM 1585 will become 45 mph.

The speed limit on Slide Road from FM 1585 (130th Street) to the southern city limits will be reduced from 70 mph to 65 mph.

The changes have to be approved in a Second Reading before becoming official.
