On Wednesday, May 27, Lubbock police arrested a man accused of throwing a liquor bottle at an officer earlier in the month.

Detectives deduced after a lengthy investigation that there was enough probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Anthony Kirk Smith, 27, who was detained Wednesday evening and charged with Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer.

The original assault happened on May 10. Around 3:45 a.m., two officers arrived at 1702 E. 4th Street in response to a civil disturbance call. While police were on the scene, a large crowd formed, and a fight broke out.

It was while the officers were waiting for backup to arrive that a liquor bottle was thrown, striking Officer Christopher Johnson in the head. The officer was taken from the scene by police vehicle to University Medical Center where he was treated and later released.

Smith has been booked in to the Lubbock County Detention Center.
